Lilian was wondering whether or not she was suicidal. The thought would have never occurred to her previous days nor had she ever considered actually killing herself when she was still living on Earth, but nowadays, she had to actually think about it. This was some risky and damned idea, and she wasn't sure what compelled her to take on yet another side quest, but here she was, sitting at the edge of the place where the sun never rose, waiting for another player to join her. She didn't know who it was, but he certainly wasn't part of the group that woke up on the fountain on the day the game launched. Not that that actually mattered too much - he's a cleric, and the idea of having someone watching her sixth for her wasn't so bad.

That didn't change the fact that, after the escapade at the ruins with a certain Neapolitan girl, she didn't think she would be stepping out of Roslare any time soon. All of it seemed dangerous, losing her life to something like this didn't sound exciting, but at the same time, there was some sort of sense of thrill that she couldn't experience. Not having to be restricted to rules and a household where only musical talents were acknowledged, it was a breath of fresh air.

Chills ran down her spine as she took another glance at Dead Man's Hill. Stony bodies of women were engraved throughout the rigid, rocky cliff sides, cracked and hollow with icy blue eyes piercing daggers through the dense tendrils of fog. The trickle of water dripping in a pitter-patter didn't sound as relaxing as the rain did.

She had to force herself not to tremble within her boots. Where was that cleric anyway? Getting this over with as soon as possible was the one thing she desired most at that very moment.

Everything about the world that existed around him was frightening. At first he'd thought that it was all swell, there was a crazy guy locking them up to fuel a god-complex, but if they defeated the game, they could be free, right? He wasn't much of a gamer, but he knew the basics, respawning, healing, working together, it was all the same. But reading through every scrap of information that he could come across, he came across the unsettling information that changed everything.

They had only three lives.

It was a blink or you miss it note at the bottom of the user interface. He only have three lives before he would cease to exist. Maybe if he died, he would be taken out of the game, but it was a danger that he couldn't risk, the creator of this game didn't seem like someone sane enough for him to predict the movements of. So with careful planning, he went ahead and played the role he'd had thrusted upon him. Luckily, he was a cleric, unlikely to be too deeply involved in the actual fighting end of the battle. His class manual said that he had five skills that he could use that mostly relied on buffing and healing someone that worked in tandem with him. It sounded frustrating at first, he had to rely heavily on the skills of another, but as he noted previously, it meant he'd be safe from danger at least.

So that was how he ended up here, at the base of Dead Man's Hill with his healing cross equipped. His leather boots squelched in the mud as he tried to approach Lillian quietly. He didn't really know her, but knew her class to be a ranger. She would be the sword, and he would be her shield, together, hopefully, he could raise enough bits to get himself a weapon for those sticky situations where something happened to his meat shield companions.

"Ready?" It was a silly question, if you thought about it. How could she be ready to plunge herself into danger, trusting him, a stranger to prevent her death. But really, did any of them have a choice?

No was immediately the first response to come to her head, that she wanted to pack up and leave, hightail it right back towards the capital where she could enjoy a nice cup of tea in the rather commodious home that they had provided for her upon entering the game. At the very least, the cleric was actually a rather handsome guy with a fair complexion and disheveled brown hair. He looked trustworthy. Lilian could totally trust this boy with her life. She just had to keep repeating it to her head and cross her fingers that autosuggestion would do the trick for her; her brother always said something about having faith in teammates in order to be victorious in games.

Heaving a deep breath after moments of steeling herself, Lilian nodded, "As ready as I'll ever be." Part of her hoped that her reluctance hadn't seeped into her voice. Without waiting for a response, she spun on her heel, pacing herself through the eerie environment. Whose sick idea was it to have this kind of area in the game? Did game developers always like to freak their players out? Her hands clutched her bow tightly, willing herself not to be shaky. A child having the courage to come all the way out here - NPC or not - must not be right in the head.

They had entered the fog a fair way through, but there still wasn't a visible sign of a kid walking through. The quest had warned not to go at night yet it didn't seem like the sun was ever around there. "Have you seen anything that could help with this?"

Running his fingers along the wood of the cross, he observed her appearance now that they finally saw each other for the first time. She was certainly dressed the part of a ranger with a bow clutched firmly in her hands. Her knuckles were white from how hard she held onto it, it was a surprise that the wood wasn't splintering from the sheer pressure of her grip. Not that he was that much better, when by chance he met eyes with a glowing gaze lurking behind a tombstone, he reflexively tightened his hold on his cross. It wouldn't do much against it, but the thought was nice.

Following along, Nate firmly ignored the stereotypical haunted house nonsense that littered the ground around them. It was the stock standard gravestones with cobwebs, gargoyles leering and angels with their faces covered. Unpleasant, not really the sort of place a child would willingly come, which was leading credence to the possibility that something else was going on. Something that probably wasn't that interested in just handing over the kid.

"Other than the notice? No." She seemed nervous, it left him to weigh up the merits of suggesting his personal theory, but safety won over her nerves. "The notice made it clear there's something that lurks here, probably whatever is stopping the child from leaving of his own accord. Might want to take out you-"

There was a crunch of earth behind them, Nate leapt back quickly away, pointing his cross in the direction of the sound. He resisted the stupid urge to ask for it to show itself, this wasn't some b-rated horror movie, this was his life now.

"Gyahh!"

The tip of a spear lanced out from the fog, leveled at the two silhouettes just ahead. When neither of them moved, snarled, tried to claw his face off, whatever, Seamus stepped forward through the thick murk, eyes narrowed at the two strangers. Human beings. He lowered his weapon, just ever so slightly, a sigh of mixed relief and exasperation escaping him. "Jeeesus. Could've said something, couldn't you? I almost ran you through."

The guy didn't look armed. He would've been coughing up iron chips if he'd been a little closer, let's leave it at that.

Uh, so he'd gotten a bit lost. It was like fucking Halloween Town here, how could he not freak out a little? He could barely see five feet in front of him, and shit, the sounds he'd heard while just trying to find his way back... Every shadow looked like some kind of monster in waiting, and who knew what kind of fucked up things lived in a place like this, in a world like this. Seamus planted the butt of his spear in the earth, slouching his shoulders. So far, he'd only run into these two. Maybe it wasn't so bad here after all.

When the cleric had suddenly stopped speaking in the middle of his answer, Lilian immediately grew suspicious, forcing herself to release the tenseness spread across her fingers. Reaching for an arrow, she was just about ready to fire when it turned out that it was only another player. Her eye twitched in annoyance. "You're the one sneaking up behind us," she huffed. "I'm not sure saying something to a possible monster would've been a good idea."

She could only hope that none of the weird amalgamations living around had heard them. It would've been the luck of the draw if, somehow, she ended up jinxing this and a horde of mysterious and questionable creatures barged right at their front door to kill them. "And what's with your lack of armor? If we were actually some monster, you could've been killed!" Her voice had the bounce of a didactic tone, her hands placing themselves on her hips. Even now, the other player - lancer? - was being very lax. Did he even have an iota of concern for his own safety?
